Can Affiliate Marketing Really Work? Read on to arm yourself with the correct info…

With so many ways to make money online, many people are turning to the Internet to seek out these numerous possibilities. While staying at home and earning an income is an attractive option, it is very important that you take the time and research the potential opportunities before jumping in.

Affiliate marketing is a legitimate way to earn money online if it is done the right way. An affiliate marketer earns a commission from a seller, or vendor, when someone purchases a product through that affiliate’s link. While the tactics vary widely, many people make a full-time income with this type of marketing.

While there is serious income potential, in order to succeed you need to treat affiliate marketing as a business and develop a plan. With dedication and serious effort, and by learning affiliate marketing properly you can be successful as an affiliate. How successful really depends on you.

So…the question remains, where do you begin?

Just like any brand new business venture, there will be a phase where you will experience information overload. There is so much information available on the Internet, it can be overwhelming for a beginner. I remember when I first started out…it was all so confusing. Through it all I’ve learned to be patient. Take your time and focus only on the information you need to get started.

While it is not difficult to make a few dollars with affiliate marketing, to build a full-time income you will need to understand a few foundational steps to make it work.

These three steps will help you get started in the right direction. I will explain more as I continue to post further articles on this topic.

1. Focus on a niche.

Usually, when people first begin promoting products, they just grab any affiliate link they can find and start promoting it. First, you should find a niche you will be interested in or have a knowledge of.

Before you decide on a niche, be sure it is not over saturated. There are so many popular niches, like weight loss and dating, you may want to think of something a bit different or more specialized by narrowing your focus. Conversely, be sure you choose a niche that has earning potential. You don’t want to pick something that has little to no targeted audience. Somewhere in the middle of these competition extremes is the best option.

Once you start researching niches, you might be surprised on the earning potential for many of the smaller niches. During your research, look at customer needs that are out there for a specific product.

2. Find a product or service.

Once you narrow down your niche, start looking for products to promote. Many people skip the first step and jump instead to this step. Your choice in affiliate products relies heavily on that niche research, because you should have learned about your targeted customer.

3. Build a website.

While you can earn money as an affiliate marketer without a website, it will difficult to advance your earnings without a site to discuss and promote products.

Many marketers have multiple websites, depending on the niche they are involved with. You can maintain one “authority” website for blog posts and market news and also create mini-sites for a specific product or a micro-niche.

4. Getting Traffic

Obviously, to make money you need customers. To get customers, you need traffic to your website. But, you don’t just want any old traffic. It is extremely important to put your marketing efforts into the quality of visitors and not the quantity.

For instance, if you have a jewelry site and you get 1,000 visitors who have no interest in jewelry, you may get lucky and land a sale or two. However, if you market to 100 targeted customers, you may make 15 sales. Which would you prefer? It’s good to note that “targeted traffic” and not just any traffic is the key to making you a successful affiliate.
